제주 개농장 아이들.. 2마리 밖에 구하지 못했습니다.
Jeju dog farm dogs…only 2 were rescued.
만 하루만입니다.
It’s been only 24 hours.
어제 이시간쯤부터 연락이 되서 지금막 집에 들어오기 까지 한 일이라곤 겨우 두마리 구했습니다
Started around this time yesterday after contacting and until just now back at home, I was able to rescue only 2 dogs.
하얀 네모칸안의 리트리버 페키니즈 두아이만 겨우 구할 수 있었습니다.
I was able to rescue only 2 dogs inside the white square – a Golden Retriever and a Great Pyrenees.
사진에서 보이는 세인트버나드 또 그외의 아이들 눈을 보고 있노라면 내가 무력한 사람이란 것이 속상합니다.
Looking into the eyes of St. Bernard and other dogs in the photo I feel sad about the fact that I am so powerless.
좀더 일찍 알았다면 좀더 일찍 손을 썻더라면 제주에서 출발을 하지 못하게 했더라면 오늘같이 속상한 일은 없었을텐데.
If I had known sooner, if I had tried sooner, if I had blocked the dog truck from departing from Jeju, this upsetting situation could have been prevented.

Because of his timely cooperation, I was able to rescue 2 dogs.
어제부터 지금까지 두마리만을 구하게된 경위를 설명드리겠습니다
I will explain how I was able to rescue only 2 dogs from yesterday to now.
아침9시30분경 제주도청으로 공문을 보내고 어제 처음 상의를 해 온 친구와 잠시 통화하고 곰곰히 생각해보니 제주에서 출발해서 많은 아이들을 필요로 하는곳은 모란시장밖에 없을것 같아 무작정 모란시장 상인회장에게 전화를 해서 차 번호를 말하고 어제 혹은 그제 제주에서 온 아이들중 리트리버 와 세인트버나드 그리고 페리니즈가 있는가 하고 물었더니 차번호는 맞고 허스키와세파트 그외 아이들 몇만 있고 벌써 대부분 진도같은 아이들은 멀리 떠났다고 합니다.
Yesterday morning around 9:30am, I sent a notice to the Jeju government office. Talked to a friend who I met just yesterday about this issue. After a bit of thinking, I decided that Moran Market must be the place where these dogs will end up so I called the president of the Moran Merchant’s Association, gave him the dog truck license number and asked him if there were any Golden Retriever, St. Bernard and Great Pyrenees from the dogs that arrived yesterday from Jeju. The association president said he knows the truck and there are only Husky, German Shepherd and a few other dogs still left and all the other dogs such as Jindo dogs are already slaughtered.
가슴이 답답해오지만 모란시장 상인회장의 말대로 작년 개고기축제를 망친 장본인으로 악연도 인연이라고 허스키와 세파트와 또 한마리의 아이만 돈을 주고 구입하겠다는 의사를 밝히고 회장이라는 사람도 협조를 하기로 하여 가격을 논의중 제주도청에서 연락이 왔습니다
I felt the frustration but I told him that I will buy the Husky, Shepherd and one other dog. The association president offered to assist me in this transaction and while we were discussing the price for these dogs, I received a call from the Jeju provincial government office.
나머지 차 두대가 같은 가족이 운전하는 차인데 경기도 김포와 서울 신정동 그리고 충남 서천에 분산하여 아이들을 내려놨고 더이상은 알 수가 없다고 하여 차 를 운전한 사람과 통화를 하게 해달라고 부탁을 하고 잠시후 운전한 사람과 통화를 했습니다.
According to the government official, the remaining 2 dog trucks are operated by a family. These trucks are dispersed to Kimpo-city, Gyeonggido-province, Seoul (Shinjeongdong) and Seocheon, Chungnam-province and unloaded the dogs in these places and that’s all the information he had. I asked to speak to the drivers and little bit later, I was able to talk to a driver.
모란시장에는 안들어 온것을 확인했는데 그렇다면 당신이 운전한 차에 실려있던 리트리버가 있는곳이 어딘지 또 아직 살아 있는지 확인하고 연락을 달라고 하자 10분후쯤 두마리는 충남 서천에 있다고 하였습니다
He has confirmed that they have not gone to Moran market. I asked him to find out and call me back where he unloaded the Golden Retriever and if he is still alive. He called me back within about 10 minutes and told me that the dog was in Seocheong, Choongnam-province.
이사람은 그간 친구들에게 시장에 팔려가는 개들은 돈을 주고 구입하지 말라고 하였습니다.
I have always told my friends never to buy the dogs that are for sale at dog markets.
헌데 오늘은 두마리 아니 모란시장의 3마리까지 5마리는 돈을 주고 구입한다고 했습니다.
However, today I have told these people that I will buy not only 2 dogs but 3 more dogs from Moran market, total of 5 dogs.
이유는 이 아이들을 근거로 또 처음 소식을 알린 친구의 정황 사진들을 근거로 동물운송과 관련한 법령을 강화 하는데 사용하기 위해서 였습니다
The reason is to use these dogs along with the photos obtained from the person who exposed these dogs as the basis to strengthen the law related to the animal transportation.
오후에 늦게 서천으로 출발해 서천 톨게이트를 빠져나와 연락을 하니 무슨 연락을 받았는지 농장은 알려줄 수 없고 주유소에서 만나기로 하고 잠시후에 두 아이를 데리고 왔습니다.
Late in the afternoon, I left for Seocheon. Passed Seocheon tollgate and called the driver. However, the driver must have heard something, because he changed his mind and would not tell where the dog farm is located but instead he wanted to meet at a gas station. A little bit later, he brought the 2 dogs with him.
그시각에 모란시장에 한친구가 허스키를 데리러 갔는데 문제가 생겼습니다
Meanwhile, a friend of mine went to the Moran market to pick up the 3 dogs he agreed to buy but a problem arose.
누군가 인터넷에 제주에서 이동된 개들이 도난된 개일 수 있다 . 절도범들이다 라는 글을 올린것을 모란시장 상인들이 보고 논쟁이 생겼습니다
Moran market merchants saw the internet posts by people about how these dogs from Jeju could be stolen pets and the people who were transporting them could be thieves and that stirred up the angry responses among the merchants.
자신들이 절도범이라면 개를 잃어버린 사람이 와서 자기 개를 지목하면 개를 돌려주는 것은 물로 자신들이 처벌을 받아도 감수하겠다 그러니 팔지는 않을것이고 분실한 사람이 직접와라 자신들이 비록 개를 팔아 먹고 살고는 있지만 절도범이라는 글은 참지 못하겠다 라며 실랑이가 벌어졌고 종국에는 허시키와 세파트는 구해오지 못했습니다.
An altercation took place and the dog merchants argued, “If we are thieves, the person who lost their dog should come to us and point the dog then we will return the dog and we will gladly receive the punishment. However, we will not sell these dogs. The person who lost their dog should come to us directly. Although we make living selling dogs but we will not tolerate being called thieves.” As a result, we could not buy the Husky and the German Shepherd.
서천에서 아이들을 넘겨받고 대전 병원으로 가서 살펴보니.
After being handed over 2 dogs, took them for an examination at a veterinary office in Daejeon.
한쪽 귀가 괴사(壞死) 되기 시작한지 꽤 시간이 지난것 같다는 원장님의 소견이 있어 몇일 후 수술을 하기로 하였습니다.
Based on Vet’s diagnosis, one ear is effected by necrosis (localized death of living tissue) for quite some time now so a surgery is scheduled few days later.
페리니즈는 외견상으로는 별 탈이 없어 보이지만 너무 말라있고 지저분하여 내일 다시 검진을 해보기로 하였습니다.
Great Pyrenees seems to be OK from appearance but he was extremely thin and dirty so decided to examine him again tomorrow.
답답한 하루였습니다.
It was a very anguishing day.
개를 구겨싣고 다녀도 처벌할 근거가 없고
There is no base for punishment even when the dogs are driven around jammed tightly in the cages.
반려동물 외에는 영업신고 의무도 없고…
There is no law requiring the registration of business except for the sale of companion dogs.
도대체 어느 아이가 반려동물이고 어느 아이는 죽여서 먹어도 된다는 말입니까?
Which dogs are companion dogs and which dogs are ok to slaughter and eat?

늦었지만 그동안 많은 이들이 동물보호법을 강화시켰다고 말하고 있지만 실제 무었이 아이들을 위해서 강화 되었다는 것인지
Many people are claiming that the animal protection law has been strengthened in Korea but in reality what has changed for these dogs.
대한민국 재래시정 곳곳에서 개를 죽이고 있음에도 왜 지금껏 동물보호법으로 처벌받게 하지 못했는지..
When the dogs are being slaughtered in outdoor markets all around the country, why can’t this act be punishable by the animal protection law…

이제라도 한가지씩 한가지씩 근거를 가지고 개정과 강화를 위해 같이 노력하십시다.
Starting now, let’s work towards the change and strengthening of animal protection law one by one with evidences.
위 사진의 수많은 아이들 눈을 언제나 떨쳐 버릴수 있을지 모르겠지만
Although I don’t know when I will be able to forget the eyes of these so many dogs
저 아이들을 위해서라도 더는 속상한 일은 보지 말아야 하겠습니다.
For the sake of these dogs, we should try so that we don’t have to see these upsetting images anymore.
