WALLA WALLA, Wash.—A Walla Walla man is being called a hero after rescuing a dog from a highway.  If it weren’t for him, the dog would not have survived.

25-year-old David Cook says he was driving on Highway 12 in Walla Walla when he saw a dog dodging in and out of traffic.  Cook pulled over and tries to stop traffic.  That’s when a driver hit the dog and just misses Cook.

“I end up rescuing the dog with oncoming traffic, with semis and cars and I manage to get them to stop,” says David Cook, rescued dog.

Cook was able to get the dog and take him to the nearest animal clinic.  NBC Right Now went to the clinic and found out the veterinarian didn’t know if the dog would survive.

“Initial presentation we didn’t know how things were going to turn out but on the physical exam we felt the shock was the biggest problem at the time,” says Dr. Brett Smith, Animal Clinic of Walla Walla.

Smith says the dog received shock therapy and surgery for a fractured leg.  He is expected to be fine.

David named the dog Milo.  He hopes the owner will pick up the dog, but if not, he promised Mile he will adopt him.
